An NFC medical ID is a card, tag or wearable with a small NFC (Near Field Communication) chip inside. When a phone is held near it, the phone reads the chip and opens the information linked to it. It works like contactless payment, but instead of paying, the tap shows who you are and what a responder needs to know about your health.

The chip in the card has no battery. It draws the small amount of power it needs from the phone tapping it, so the card never needs charging and keeps working for years. On most Android phones with NFC switched on, the tap opens your emergency profile directly in the browser, usually in under a second.
The chip holds a link to your emergency profile, not your medical records. Your details live in your MySafeCard account, so when your medication or emergency contact changes you update it once and every future tap shows the new information. You never need to rewrite or replace the card.
